長詩《胡笳十八拍》傳為東漢蔡琰(蔡文姬)所作,明代中晚期出現的《綠猗新聲》(1597年)與《琴適》(1611年)均載有琴歌版本的《胡笳 十八拍》,在歷史上有著重要地位。 此次發行的《敘事琴歌:胡笳十八拍》依據《琴適》本,由古琴演奏家林晨打譜,「十八拍」的每段音樂曲調簡潔而富情感,雖似重複而又富變化 ,在這「變」與「不變」之間,既訴說著戰爭中人們悲慘的生命狀態,又慨嘆著蔡文姬自身流落他鄉的悲苦、返回故土時的興奮以及骨肉別離時糾結、兩難的心緒。 與傳統琴歌不同的是,為了更好地表達《胡笳十八拍》中所蘊含的情感變化,歌者龔琳娜在本張專輯中加入了笙、笛、簫、塤與打擊樂,不僅擴大了傳統 琴歌作品的表現力,在聲樂演唱部分的可聽性也顯著提升。
